Hello and welcome! My name is Dr. Shaiya Robinson, and I’m an assistant professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Science at McMaster University. I am passionate about all things teaching and…. guts. No, I don’t necessarily mean gore, although I do love horror movies (real ones know lol).
My academic path has been rather “gutsy”, and you can learn more about my journey here. As a person living with ulcerative colitis, understanding gut health is something of personal interest. However, similar to most other scientists, I am simply fuelled by the questions “why?” and “how?” , and I am truly fascinated with learning and understanding more about the world around us.
As a teaching-track professor, my current research centres pedagogy, and you can learn more about it here. When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me reading, binge-watching on Netflix (I’m not ashamed to admit this lol), baking, or sewing.
My approach to teaching is shaped by my undergraduate experiences and the desire to be the professor I wish I had. As an undergraduate student, I rarely understood the relevance of what I was being taught.
Now, as a trained molecular cell biologist and educator, I have a deep appreciation for how science intersects with everyday life, and I strive to create a brave classroom environment in which I can awaken a similar appreciation in my students. My teaching philosophy is grounded on two fundamental pillars: 1) igniting students’ curiosity and engagement about biology, and 2) challenging students to critically appraise the ways in which life sciences intersect with social sciences.
